Top New Zealand Visa Categories for 2026
1. Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
This is the primary work visa for 2026, requiring a job offer from an NZ-accredited employer.
New Wage Threshold: Starting March 9, 2026, the immigration median wage has increased to NZD 35.00 per hour.
National Occupation List (NOL): New Zealand has added 47 new occupations to the NOL, including specialized roles in construction, hospitality (new chef categories), and technical trades.
Duration: Typically granted for up to 5 years for high-skilled roles (Skill Levels 1–3).
2. The Green List (Fast-Track to PR)
The Green List identifies roles in high demand. If your occupation is listed, you have a simplified path to residence:
Tier 1 (Straight to Residence): For Software Engineers, Doctors, and Architects. You can apply for residency immediately upon securing a job.
Tier 2 (Work to Residence): For Teachers, Registered Nurses, and Skilled Tradespeople. You can apply for residency after 2 years of working in NZ.
3. New Trades & Technician Pathway (August 2026)
Launching in late 2026, this new pathway is designed specifically for workers in trade roles (like Diesel Mechanics and Electricians) who hold a Level 4+ qualification and have 4 years of experience.
